Our Purpose

《說文新附》
嶺=山道也。从山，領聲。

南＝艸木至南方有枝任也。从𣎵，𢆉聲。

"South of the Mountain Pass" is what 嶺南 translates to. However, that many words doesn't make it a good place name, so it's best to translate 嶺南 word-for-word into Latin, which we should get  "Australcallis". This region of the world, is where people speak the 粵 language, and historically consists of the areas covering the modern Chinese provinces of 江西, 湖南, 廣東, 廣西, 海南 as well as modern northernViệt Nam(越南). However, from the 唐朝 (T'ang Dynasty), this region exclusively refers to modern-day 廣東, 廣西, & 海南.

The purpose of this website is to celebrate the diversity of this region. What makes it unique from other regions around it, and the diversity within. Currently, this region is subsumed by the Communist-led Peoples' Republic of China's propaganda machine, while they publicly celebrate the fact that they have diverse ethnicities, however, its discriminating policies say something else. This is because they tell you, they are multiple cogs in a monolithic machine with a purpose to do something in the world, all parts do not matter to the ultimate sum. They tell this to all outsiders, and its own people.

This makes it difficult for anyone to look carefully at the distinct differences of people in specific terms without being accused of "separatism". We hope to break past this mold, defy these misconceptions, by figuring out, what makes 嶺南 culture unique. Because it needs to be celebrated. Afterall, 蘇東坡 once asked, 『不辭長作嶺南人？』(“Why not be a "Austracallisian?”)
